Chapter Twelve

“You know you looming like that defies the purpose of snooping, right?” I shuffle my feet, which are itching to get away from Zoltan.

“Investigating.” His intent stare dares me to argue with him.

“It defies the purpose of investigating.” Pushing the words through clenched teeth, I want to slap the amused twinkle from his eye. “You should’ve gone with Fenrir. Silas is going to kill my mother before any of you realize what’s happening.”

We split into pairs to get more things done, according to Zoltan. Astara, who seems upset with me, left with Fenrir to keep an eye on my mother’s dinner date. Leo and Daren went to the human realm to find out if Myst has any information we can use. To my greatest joy, Tenebris got stuck with Azgor and they are keeping watch over the portal. The panther was so pissed he couldn’t come with me that he almost bit Azgor’s leg off when the ghoul walked past him. Because I laughed at the shifter, karma bit me in the ass.

I got saddled with Zoltan.

“You don’t trust Fenrir?” Cocking one eyebrow, he steps closer to me.

“It’s my mother I don’t trust. On the best of days, I have to restrain myself from throttling her. Have you met the female?” Sticking my head around the corner, I scan the deserted hallway. Why aren’t there more people walking around?

“Sophia is just like any typical female vampire.” Zoltan dismisses my comment with a flick of his hand. “They feel entitled.”

“They are entitled.” Which is what started all this crap to begin with.

If vampires didn’t think the moon shined from their ass, then Roberti would’ve had a harder time enlisting help from humans wanting to become more than what nature made them out to be. Add to that the invincibility the bloodsuckers get when becoming Daywalkers and you have the perfect reason for people to want them gone. I get Roberti’s hook. He is using everyone’s feeling of repression to realize his plans. I don’t agree with it, but I sure as all hells get it. Inching to the side, I slip past Zoltan and move down the hall.

“If you were Andrius, which Titan would you try to release from his prison?” I ask the vampire when he falls in step with me. “I sound like a broken record but that has been nagging me from the moment I set eyes on the damn book.”

Zoltan chews on the question for a long moment, and just when I think he won’t answer, he shrugs a shoulder. “Does it matter? He will not be freeing anything.”

“I think it matters a lot.” Offering a tightlipped smile to a shifter walking past, I wait until I don’t feel their presence anymore. “It might give us a clue as to what Roberti is planning to achieve with all this.”

“He wants war.”

“I have no idea in which dimension you’ve been living, but if he simply wants war, he could have it without all the shit he’s been trying to pull.
